Statin myopathy risk
Pharmacogenomics
SLCO1B1 transports statins into the liver. Reduced-function alleles raise blood statin levels and the risk of muscle side effects — most pronounced with simvastatin, but CPIC also gives guidance for atorvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, pitavastatin, pravastatin and rosuvastatin.
- If you take or start a statin and develop muscle aches, mention this result to your prescriber.
- The risk is largest for simvastatin. CPIC sets a dose limit for each statin, so a lower dose or a different statin is usually enough.

Exons of the gene's MANE Select transcript (release v1.5), from NCBI and EMBL-EBI, on the GRCh38 reference genome.
Chromosome bands from UCSC's GRCh38 ideogram (2022-10-29).
Nearby genes from Ensembl release 116, on GRCh38.
Exons make up 2.8 kb of the gene's 108.6 kb; 2,076 of those bases code for the protein.

None of them falls in a region short reads find hard.
A whole genome covers all 108.6 kb of SLCO1B1, introns included, not only the 2.8 kb of exons.
