Sessile Serrated Polyposis Cancer Syndrome
Autosomal dominant
In some families, serrated polyposis is linked to a change in one copy of RNF43, a tumour suppressor that limits Wnt signalling in the gut lining.
Signs and symptoms
Multiple serrated polyps in the colon and rectum, found during colonoscopy in adulthood. Symptoms may be absent until polyps are found, although bowel cancer can develop. Bleeding or a change in bowel habit may also occur.
What a diagnosis changes
Regular colonoscopy with removal of polyps reduces bowel cancer risk, and surgery is considered when polyps cannot be controlled. First-degree relatives may be advised to have colonoscopy screening, and genetic counselling and family testing are offered when an RNF43 change is found.
