Autosomal recessive
Caused by changes in both copies of CACNA2D4, which encodes part of a calcium channel at the photoreceptor synapse. Loss of the channel impairs signal transmission from photoreceptors, especially cones.
Signs and symptoms
Reduced cone-mediated vision has been reported, and retinitis pigmentosa has been described in one family. Human clinical data are limited.
What a diagnosis changes
Regular eye assessment and low-vision aids help with daily life. Both parents are usually carriers, so genetic counselling and carrier testing for relatives are offered.
