En bronkial sykdom som kjennetegnes av kronisk betennelse og innsnevring av luftveiene. Den skyldes en kombinasjon av miljømessige og genetiske faktorer og gir gjentatte perioder med pipende pust (en pipelyd under pusting), trykk i brystet, tungpustethet, slimproduksjon og hoste. Symptomene oppstår som følge av en rekke utløsende faktorer, som allergener, irriterende stoffer, luftveisinfeksjoner, værendringer, fysisk anstrengelse, stress, refluksykdom, medisiner, matvarer og emosjonell angst.
