Genomic evidence for adaptation to tuberculosis in the Andes before European contact
The study analysed high-coverage whole genomes from Indigenous people in the Ecuadorian highlands to identify signals of natural selection. The strongest signals lay in immune regions associated with tuberculosis, suggesting adaptation thousands of years before European contact, alongside a severe population collapse coinciding with European arrival.

Dante Labs’ involvement
Dante Labs carried out the whole genome sequencing for this study. The libraries, prepared with the NEB Ultra II Illumina library kit and corresponding unique dual indexes (New England Biolabs), were sequenced on our Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform at a mean coverage of 25x.
