Glaucoma Report

Glaucoma Report

Glaucoma is a chronic medical condition and one of the most common causes of irreversible vision loss (if not treated promptly).
At the base of its paathogenesis is the alteration of the mechanism of production and reabsorption of intraocular fluid (aqueous humor), normally present to keep the eyes in optimal conditions: if this mechanism of recirculation of the liquid is slowed down, it will tend to accumulate, resulting in an increase in intraocular pressure and consequent damage to the optic nerve (responsible for the transmission of visual signals from the eyes to the brain areas responsible for their processing).
Glaucoma is a multifactorial condition, whose genesis can contribute to various risk factors such as elevated intraocular pressure (the main cause of glaucoma, as well as that which can be treated with specific therapies), age, family history, diabetes and hypertension. Genetic predisposition, especially in late onset forms, plays fundamental roles. This report analyzes the main genes involved in the genesis of glaucoma.
