The Inflammatory Bowel Disease test is based on Germline DNA mutation analysis. As such, it analyzes all Common and Rare Variants associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease instead of a limited set of genes.
The term ""Inflammatory Bowel Disease"" (IBD) includes a set of medical conditions of multifactorial origin, consisting of a state of chronic inflammation affecting the intestinal district. Its etiology is complex and not fully understood although it is now clear that, in genetically predisposed subjects, triggering factors of environmental or endogenous origin can act, linked to an inappropriate immune response of the subject towards the resident microbial communities.
IBS includes two main entities: Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease, both characterized by a strong inflammatory substrate. While the former mainly affects the colon mucosa, the latter can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus. In both cases, the clinical course can see the alternation between remissions and exacerbations and the main symptoms include watery or bloody diarrhea (especially in the case of UC), abdominal pain, weight loss, fever and possible extraintestinal manifestations affecting the skin , joints, eyes and kidneys.
Based on the most recent scientific evidence, it would seem that in subjects with IBD there may be a dysregulation of the innate and adaptive immunity, which disrupts the natural but delicate balance existing between the host and the microbial communities that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. This involves the alteration of the epithelial barrier, which exposes the intestinal mucosa to secreted proinflammatory molecules.
The inflammatory state that is established tends to become chronic, presenting itself with the typical irregular and transumural lesions of Crohn's disease (fissures, ulcerations and fistulas possibly in any segment) and with ulcerations and possible abscesses in Ulcerative Colitis, although in this case lesions are limited to colon mucosa.
This panel analyzes the main genes associated with onset of IBD.
Along with environmental factors, Genetics plays a key role in the regulation of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. - more than 120 genes analyzed - 100% of genomic regions covered - Intragenic and intergenic regions analyzed - All variants reported.
